STRANGE BRIGADE - STEAM REVIEW (PC)

A REVIEW IAN CHANDLER

Strange Brigade by Rebellion is a third person action-adventure set in a steampunk style 1930s, which features 1-4 online co-op, a variety of weapons, traps and puzzles. It’s available on PC, Xbox 1 and PS4, usually for around £25.00.

The setting is Egypt, where an ancient evil force, Seteki the Witch Queen has been unwittingly let loose by an archeologist. It’s the job of the Strange Brigade, made up of Nagala Rushida (African tribeswoman), Frank Fairburne (sharpshooter) Professor De Quincy (Scholar) and a Manchester factory worker Gracie Braithwaite. Each have their own starter weapons, and have a different powered up attack which you get by killing a variety of nasties.

Strange-Brigade-4.jpg

The game itself looks pretty enough, and plays very similarly to Rebellion’s own Sniper Elite series but without slow motion replays of internal injuries.

I played mainly as Nagala, as she seemed to have the best starter weapon, also after finding a power-up, I discovered that I could take a lot of enemies out with one shot.

These weapon power-ups are difficult to find and in four stages I only managed to get the one. This is due to the nature of the puzzles in the game which have locked doors hidden by symbols that have to be opened in a variety of ways. Some of these are very obvious, some seemed completely random and you only get 3 chances before the door gets locked for good.

The quantity of enemies, mainly mummies and giant scorpions, can make the game a bit of a slog and you have to clear all of them in a certain area before moving on. There are some traps like spinning blades and spikes dotted about that you can shoot to activate, and occasionally you’ll pick up other weapons like grenade launchers which can help, but often the sheer weight of numbers makes it hard going. Ammunition dumps are quite well dotted around and your character’s pistol has infinite ammo but is really only good for setting off traps as it’s very weak. It’s the constant mowing down of the same creatures, together with a pretty but repetitive set of backgrounds that makes this game best played in multiplayer, as in one-player the puzzles aren’t amazing and you’ve basically seen all of this done before.

PROS: Nice concept, good in short bursts, nice cut scenes

CONS: One player gameplay can get repetitive, samey backgrounds

The Art of Stranski - Lorenzo Etherington interview at the Wildman Gallery

Neil attended a very wet 'Lakes International Comic Art Festival' but that didn't stop him from interviewing!

Here he talks to Lorenzo Etherington; who along with his brother Robin is more widely celebrated as the Etherington Brothers and whose comics for all ages are adored by an army of fans. A point admirably demonstrated earlier this year when their 'How to Think When you Draw' Kickstarter campaign became the biggest funded UK comic project ever.

When Neil caught up with Lorenzo it was at the Wildman Gallery where his Art of Stranski Exhibit had just opened (12th October to 15th November). So sit back and discover together this forgotten lost 1940s masterpiece.... [Spoiler - Its all Lorenzo!]

Beyond that, we talk about the rumoured Game Boy phone case, moan about the Switch pre-Christmas line up and just generally have a natter… Ahhh, we’ve missed this!

Blast Process @ EGX 2018 (BIRMINGHAM NEC)

EGX_Banner_1_image950w.jpg

EGX is the biggest gaming event in the UK, this year it took place at the Birmingham NEC from the 20-23rd of September, and as always Blast Process were there to cover the event.

The first thing we did was head off to the Indie area to see what caught our eye. Neil’s attuned Indie senses soon locked onto the Curve Digital stand where ‘Carried Away’ was being exhibited. With this trusty Singstar Mic in-hand, Neil switched into Interview mode!

In 'Carried Away' you construct ski lifts, jumps and bridges from a range of building materials to help your passengers navigate the ups and downs of the treacherous mountain landscape. Master the rope physics and the stresses and strains it will put on your constructions. Cutting corners along the way will compromise the safety and comfort of your passengers. When design alone isn't enough, turn to your skiing skills to get that extra nudge towards your destination.

Carried Away is available on Steam Early Access right now! The full game will arrive Early 2019 along with a version for Nintendo Switch!

After we’d had a good chinwag with the Hugecalf boys another Indie gem glistened on the horizon, the game in question was Eagle Island…

We were really struck with Eagle Island, it’s a game created and developed by mostly one person, Nick Gregory, who kindly agreed to be interviewed by us.

We'd like to extend a thanks to the rest of the team at Screenwave Media (who are publishing the game) who were very welcoming and friendly, we enjoyed chatting with you guys!

Eagle Island will be available on Steam in the not too distant future, you can add it to your Wishlist at the link below:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/68...

After our stint in the Indie section we went off to see what else EGX had to offer, Tom however, only had eyes for one game though, so he led Mike and Neil to the Bandai Namco area where a certain weapon based fighter was gathering plenty of attention…

Yes, the long-awaited Soul Calibur 6 was playable at EGX 2018, once Tom got the game in his sights he challenged Mike to a duel, best of 3, who will win? Let's fight!

After Soul Calibur it didn’t take Tom long to spot another favourite games series of his, Team Sonic Racing and the game was playable at the Sega stand…so it was decided, we would film the first ever ‘On Tour’ episode of our regular ‘Tom Plays’ series…

Lastly we decided to chill out with some Arcade games, it was there that we bumped into Anthony from Retro Games Party who kindly agreed to chat with Neil about providing Arcade Machines for events and of course, the joys of Arcade gaming!

To find out more about Retro Games Party, check out the link below:

www.retrogamesparty.co.uk

And that was that! As well as spending a bit more time looking around other various areas of the massive event, we had had our fill of EGX 2018 and headed home. Honestly it’s a fantastic event and well worth your time, head on over to the official EGX website to find out more and make sure you grab tickets to next year’s event as soon as they’re available!

Have a guess what we’re doing in the wake of the Playstation Classic announcement? Playing a little guessing game as to what’s on the console! Besides that, Tom’s finally beaten a video game he’s been playing for 5 years, Mat’s salivating over a Katamari Port and we get the low down on EGX 2018. Cor! That’s a lot for one podcast for sure! You’re welcome internet!

Blast Zone! Tournament - Steam Review (PC)

BB_Poster_Logo_Final-1200x675.jpg

A REVIEW BY IAN CHANDLER

Do you like Bomberman? Do you like dressing up your in game character in different outfits? Do you like loot boxes? Then you’ll LOVE Blast Zone! Tournament, currently in Early Access on steam, the sequel to Bomb Buddies (unfortunate name?) from Victory Lap Games

最终资源_NEW_Slide_IN_1-15-1200x676.jpg

The game starts with bright colourful menus and thumping techno music (though I am old so it could be any one of the millions of thumpy noises them kids listen to these days). Your avatar has the super-deformed big head anime look and has literally billions (10 billion combinations according to the publisher) of outfits, hairstyles etc. so you could spend hours dressing your little bomberperson. Also there are loot boxes you can buy for real money full of outfits and numerous other stuff.

GRAVEYARD_ZOMBIE-1200x675.png

There are ten game modes such as Free for All, Team Deathmatch, Treasure Mode (coins are sometimes released when bombs go off) and Zombie Mode, which turns any dead players into zombies who can walk through blasts and infect other players. Lots of Power-Ups are available to increase Speed and Bomb Range, as well as Ultimates which offer other abilities like being able to throw or kick bombs across the screen.

RACETRACK_BOTTOMEXPLODE-1200x675.png

The one player mode has 240 levels divided into 7 zones like Jungle, Pirate Ship and a Disco dance floor. The multiplayer options cover 283 levels across the 7 zones and allows up to 32 online players at the same time. Victory are targetting this as an esport, and like other esports games the PC requirements are minimal, listing only a Pentium with 512Mb graphics needed to run it (though I wonder how well such a machine will handle 32 players  on screen at once) and I had no issues running it at a good speed with my somewhat-overkill Ryzen 7 and GTX1080.

DANCECLUB_SCORPION-1200x675.png

So, aside from loot boxes, costumes and hundreds of levels, how does it actually PLAY?

Very well in fact, super smooth with bright colourful graphics and a good learning curve so even someone not good at Bomberman in the past can get a good game in. The one player game has a good variety of challenges and is a good way to train you for the multiplayer, which is where the long term fun is to be had. Having a screen full of characters and bombs going off in all directions really is a lot of fun with friends, and the deep customisation and many game modes really reward extended play. It’s not cheap at £15.49, but there is a lot there if you enjoy Bomberman and multiplayer gaming in general.

So, if you liked Bomberman you’ll love it, if you didn’t this won’t change your mind.

Tom Plays WWE 2K18 (PS4)

It's a Tom Plays first, we play a wrestling game! The most recent in fact (until the next yearly update is released), WWE 2K18!

Tom jumps into the MyPlayer mode, where he creates a new wrestler and joins wrestling boot camp before heading off to appear on NXT, sadly though, Tom finds little in the way of actual wrestling in this mode, instead confronted with short snippets of gameplay and plenty of load screens.

He does however play a proper match nearer the end of the video and is happy to report that the actual Wrestling is top notch and looks fantastic!

NOTE: It would seem none of the in-game music plays back when streamed! That's pretty interesting, sorry about that, had no idea - Tom

TMA 197 – Better than Strictly!

tma.jpg

On yet another TMA, the boys discuss more than the latest episode of strictly and haiku’s! Tom’s been playing some Tetris (and quilting), but also finding Yakuza Kawami to be less than what was promised in terms of Shenmue succession. Mat’s been playing some Donut County and forcing things into holes… Beyond that, the boys debate the length of games, discuss some of their favourite retro retailers and have a good old natter about originality in games!

Parry's Pickups! Episode 67... - Birthday Bonus Import Special!

What? How? There's more Parry's Pickups!? You may be asking yourselves this question, you may not be, but it's true, all of it!

Let me explain, this video came about because there's no Episode 67 of Parry's Pickups, I accidentally missed it out...somehow... Seeing as it was my Birthday coming up and I'd bought myself a few games from Genki Video Games to celebrate, I thought, let's do a new one and make up for the missing episode!

Please enjoy :)

NOTE: This vid is NOT a paid advertisement for Genki Video Games, I do however highly want to recommend them as a great place to get imported games online. I've been buying games from them for years and the service is impeccable and I just wanted to give something back as a way of saying thanks!

Tom Plays Yakuza Kiwami (PS4)

Tom has been persuaded by his podcasting buddy Mat to give Yakuza another another try, if only as a way to see how the genre of cinematic story driven adventure games have progressed since 1999's landmark, Shenmue.

From this hour-long play from the beginning of the game, Tom has come to the conclusion that, in Yakuza, the cutscene is king!
